That sounds complicated! I must admit, I tend to use reference photos from the internet (I haven't had the opportunity to photograph Polar bears, for example :) and them squirrels are damn quick!). I'm hoping that no one will ever be able to tell which photograph I've used! I see your point though. It must be easier to recognise the reference when you're working in 2d, and some animals have very particular markings.
