But honestly I really didn't notice too much since some of my friends were the same or worse. My best friend was far better off than myself, but never made me feel bad for it. I would say it wasn't traumatic in any way. It just firmly set in my mind that in order to avoid being there I must work to earn my keep. My father set the example in overcoming great odds he started his own business and by working really hard he got us out of that situation. It's funny how we don't mind telling people when we're older - we're even proud of it almost - but when we were kids, we never would have told a soul!!
