Art Horse Magazine
So I just had to tell you about a new magazine I subscribed to called Art Horse Magazine. Whats the magazine about you ask? The name says it all.
I wanted to post a picture of one of their covers in this blog but they didn’t have one available for use. And I am not the type to just take an image off their site, even if it is to promote their mag. So no beautiful horse picture today.
It was one of those things where it kept coming up in conversations, and an artist friend of mine is designing their award medals for the art show they hold and had called me to brainstorm ideas, and Carol Eilers the editor/publisher of Apples ‘N Oats magazine, actually sent me a link to their site. I’m not one to ignore all these not so subtle hints and went to their website. I not only subscribed but purchased all the back issues they had available, (which was like 5.)
It is a lovely magazine with gorgeous art photos (the kind that make me say “Damn, I wish I had painted that!”) In general per issue there appears to be an article on a breed, an equine artist, on 3-dimensional work, equine history and some misc. My only complaint is they are too small (issues need to be bigger as in more pages,) and there’s not near enough issues per year. (only 2 a year) By the time I’ll get the next one, I’ll have forgotten I ordered it.
Hmm… sounds like they need more writers so that they can include more articles in each issue and more issues too!
This magazine used to be called Equine Images, I have a stack of them when I subscribed prior to the net opening up so much eye candy and information. I didn’t realize they were down to two a year. Will give their site a look, the net is really impacting printed media, I believe.
Thanks for your article on style. I am still grappling with mine for sure. Thought I was getting one, but with the bouncing around now between the oil pastels and color pencils, I guess not. I plan to put up a website soon anyway, will limit it to animals, but that is it for my style. Some still lifes and florals call to me, but I am ignoring that for now. I am working on my portfolio for a few more weeks, may want to ask your adice on what to put on the website and what not to in relation style concerns.
Hope you are getting dry(?)
I posted four cp’s, Monday, in one post on wet canvas colored pencil forum.

Hey Angela, hope you had a good visit at your moms. Art Horse magazine is not the latest incarnation of Equine Images. (That mag is currently called Horses in Art and I have been subscribing to it for over 15 years. actually got the latest issue yesterday.) Art Horse has been around for a little over 2years and is really like the grown up version of the other. Kinda like if Smithsonian did a horse art magazine. Glossy, horsey, luxury.
I’ll check out wetcanvas tonight to see what you’ve been up to. Unless curiosity gets me there sooner.
Undaunted Hmmm. . . maybe I should give that some thought.
My sincerest apologies for assuming that about the magazine. Will check it out, thanks for sharing. Angela
Hey Angela,
No need to apologize. Did I come across harsh? I really got to stop writing first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Unfortuanetly thats when I have the free time. (like now) I actually had put in a blurb about Horses in Art in my post’s draft, but then cut it as extranious. I was kinda thinking at the time perhaps I should have left it in after all.
Really like the new work. Especially the paint foal and your little dog. (cutest expression) Do you find working in so small a format hard?
Thanks for looking at my work, Mona. When I stopped oil painting/do art in the mid nineties, I never did anything smaller than 18 by 24 in oils or soft pastel. and did oil paintings in the three and four foot range. When I came back, discovering wet canvas, I started with 9X12 to fit on the scanner. I have gone smaller with the CPs because want to work faster (at least for now) on developing my skills and portfolio, the cost of sanded surfaces which I like is high and lastly I have half an eye on OSWOA’s and maybe ACEO’s for a start out on EBAY (like Maggie did — she recommended small and painting a day to really build one’s skills as well as start out marketing). I greatly admire the big now. I think the CP’s lend themselves to small, but so far I have not enjoyed smaller than 5×7. I am thinking of marketing 5×7 on the small end as the boards fit onto a table top plate holder quite well, and according to Maggie, others, if spayed properly, need no glass — have been thinking of those for some getting out in the world displays — no framing to start and thinking of marketing on the low price side. Plan to try working on the OSWOA’s and ACEO’s after get a website going. I do think large is more expressive and enthralling for the most part, and also many people who work only small seem afraid to go large. It is interesting to me that the American Academy of Equestrian Art is showing some bias toward small and putting size limits on exhibits. Just rambling here.
No, you were not harsh, I was presumptuous and should apologize.
Working on a cat in OP for the monthly challenge on the wet canvas right now, not going well but will plunge on.

So what’s an OSWOA? I really need to spend more time on eBay. Not currently listing anything on eBay. May do so again in July. But again I have only listed prints. I did list some ACEO’s. In fact was my first sale of a set of canvas prints for $105. We were blown away and got all excited. Most of my ACEO prints go for $5-15. Have you been watching the market for original ACEO? At one time some went for big bucks, but I haven’t checked lately.
ARe you in process of building your site? I know you’ve mentioned but can’t remeber if your having it built now or planning it.
I think of what is what like when I was starting all this new stuff like you building a website and selling online. And Undaunted getting ready for her first exhibit. Exciting times for both of you.
Hi Mona, I am working on a portfolio of 15 to 20 animal related works. I then hope to build a website using one of the template, domain and hosting provided sites, either sitekreator or fineartstudiosonline. Probably sitekreator. I do not yet know how difficult or easy it will be. I will also use this portfolio to make a brochure (then distribute to pet related businesses) for pet portraits and business cards. I have alot of old work colleagues to broadcast my web to. Then I may do a blog also, but that is scary to me. I am thinking of EBAY, as that was Maggie’s way to work regularly and get known, even with commissions being the ultimate goal. OSWOA is Original Small Works of Art, a woman started this for the EBAY market and has a website for them, 4×6, no prints. Alot of artists hate EBAy ritght now and recommend against it in favor of Yetsy and Yessy, etc. I think I will try it, though — it still seems like the best marketing site for finding stuff easily. Yes, it is exciting times, but overwhelming at the same time. I admire the work ethic both you and Maggie have — really I think that is the ultimate “right stuff” and even being retired from fulltime money making work, it is a struggle to make the work ethic function for me with the farm and art. I do not structure as well as I should — got to get those goals down more consistently.

Ah, thanks for the input on OSWOA Angela. I am unsure how I feel about eBay, I haven’t had any problems with customers, and I really don’t do a huge amount of business there. but it definately takes away the fair play if sellers can no longer leave negative feedback.
I think the working ’til I drop thing is in the genetics. I think whatever goal you set for yourself, it is worthy to aspire to. My way can take some of the fun out of it, which is supposed to be what it’s all about.
I will be posting an article on the Build It And They Will Come myth. I want to say that this in no way is directed at you (or Undaunted.) We have discussed things well enough by now that I know you don’t fall into this category. I deal with so many “newbie” artists at the gallery that I just felt the need to put it out there.
Blessings
Forgot to ask, why is blogging scary?
