Back From Brookings

It didn’t ra-in, (kick) It didn’t raaain (twirl, spin and kick) La la la, I did not rain! That’s the sound of me doing a happy dance.

Actually the weather was just about as perfect as you could get. Buying was down about 25% over last year. I have no idea how much is the economy, or the non-stop news talk about the economy but so far the events have been less. (mind you, I’ve been rained out of pretty much everything. So it may be slightly unfair to judge at this stage.) Of course Brookings has always been a mediocre event unless one of my patrons wants to add to their collection.

I’ve got a few snaps and will talk about Brookings Summer Arts tomorrow in more detail. But since I have been home for less than 24 hours I am going to do a little fluff stuff that has nothing to do with art (at all) but I found it kind of interesting.

Jimmy Johns
For those of you unfamiliar, Jimmy Johns is a chain of sub shops. They make really excellent (they call them gourmet, but I think that’s pushing it) basic subs. It’s quick. Most of the time the sandwich is done before you’ve finished paying. The bread is fabulous and they are cheap. 8″ sandwich for $4.25. Yummy!

Anyway part of there thing is they have signs plastered all over their dining area. And one of the signs had some interesting stuff on it. I am obviuosly paraphrasing here, but you’ll get the idea.

The mind is a wonderful thing.
Rceently the Uvniresity of Cmairbige did a sutdy wehre tehy divoscered taht you cluod mix up the odrer of the lteters in a wrod, and as lnog as the frist leettr and the lsat lteter wree in tehir crecort piostion, a poesrn colud sucllscesfuy raed waht was wrtietn. Congratulations on having the good weather, Mona! You certainly deserved that. I am sorry the sales were down, but it still sounds good. I am not surprised if the economy isn’t effecting things.

I spent yesterday applying for some partime social work jobs, due to my economy at least. Got a letter from the IRS about 2006 taxes, my misunderstanding, maybe — if get resolved in my favor, may not have to hop on a job, if I got one. But am mindful, that the older I get, the less likely it is that I am “hirable”. I am not giving up on art or art for some income either, just know that that is a longer haul than I think Maggie was able to do. Even at my best, I don’t work as well as fast as she does for one. Her posts made me believe, but I am not sure I now believe I could ever do it as fast as her even if I believe I can do it.

Love the sign thing, it felt like a miracle that I could read it so easily. Very intriguing, thanks for posting it.

Hope you are getting rested. Angela

Hey Angela, In truth I have never known anyone who created with such ferver as Maggie does. (And I know many hundreds of artists- literally) The key for her is working small which is a struggle for me. I like it big. Also I don’t think she had to earn it to live, which makes it a completely different thing when you are starting out.

I can’t tell you how many artists I’ve talked with recently who are going towards working for a pay check. So far things are a little down at the fairs but up at the gallery (go figure) though I am using the mailing list more and more to move the originals. (Lambs sold yesterday)

I completely understand about being less hirable. I haven’t done anything but the art thing for 15 years. At this point my skill level is good for Walmart or flipping burgers. Well maybe not quite that bad, but there also isn’t much options out here in the boonies.

I hope it all works out for you. You mention government and taxes and it sends a chill down my back. Uhg. What kind of work are you looking for?

Jimmy Johns - hmm… sounds like a name for the toilet, or undergarments for the incontinent! Is it like Subway? I love Subway!

Was the tnihg aobut the uitensviry sudty one of the tnighs taht was wietrtn on the sgnis?

  4. MonaMajorowicz Says:

Ha! Never thought of it like that. It is soooo much better than Subway. (Sorry, I think I have just eaten too many of their subs.) Really it is the bread that makes all the difference. Occasionally Subway bread takes like wood shavings (maybe that is just here in the states though.)

    Ummm. . . Yes.
