Belgian Draft Horse Painting

Here is my painting inspired by my last trip to the Britt Draft Horse Show.

I created it when I was participating in a gallery exhibition. I felt kinda uncomfortable about the whole thing as mine was to be of a handfull of representational works. I was going to stick out like a sore thumb among all the abstract and contemporary works. As I have participated in many shows where the representational works tended to fall at the bottom when it came to curators and judges I felt a little . . . ummm . . . snarky about it all.

It amused me to no end while I painted it, as well as while it was hung in the show. Frankly even though it is years later it still amuses to look at it. Plus the title is always worth a chuckle. And for those of you wondering, it sells really well. Especially among the draft horse people.

This painting is great, and I can see why it amuses! Was it designed as a sort of “birdie” to the judges? Hehehe, I plan one of those myself!

    sort of. :) hehe

What do you have planned? You got me curious.

I plan to make a clay sculpture of a hand with three fingers sticking up! I shall call it “Three” but I know the real meaning is “Read between the lines”! It’s my response to that man at the art college all those years ago. It’s my way of saying “up yours, I’m doing what I want to do anyway” I just wish I knew his name so that I could make sure he got to see it! :D

Ha! Good for you. :) I’ll keep an eye out for it.

We saw this painting and thought it looked like the stalls at Britt?? I think that it could have been my husband’s grandpa’s hitch. Do you know who the horses belonged to? Awesome painting!

Thanks Amanda, No I don’t know who they belong to. I did take the reference photos at Britt several years back though. (Perhaps 5 or 6) I can say that the red behind the horses was from the event. I don’t know whether it was hitch colors or just a wind shade. I do also still have the reference photo which I could email you if that would help. :)
