Foal WIP
So here is the latest work in progress shot.
The foreleg looks rather wonky at the moment, since it is only blocked in. I would usually wait to take a picture when it wasn’t at an ugly stage like this, but I wanted to get it posted and the day was over, so there you go. Hopefully it will look normal (or a close approximation to normal) when I get it completed. Which may possibly be this weekend.
They (meaning the radio weather people) are talking about a bunch of snow, (accompanied by high winds.) So my Sunday plans of running wild with an old friend (make that-long time friend, she is older than me by about 3 weeks) of mine, will most likely be canceled. Blizzard conditions are hard for me to picture. At the moment it is a balmy 56 degrees.
Providing I don’t completely bugger up the grassy background, I need to come up with a title for this piece. Anyone got any ideas?

Ugly stage? I have no idea what you’re talking about, I think it’s gorgeous!
Snow seems like a distant memory for us now, so it seems strange when people mention it.
Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, there’s my title suggestion. The foal looks like a child on summer vacation, very relaxed and carefree, resting after a lot of boisterous play. It doesn’t look bad, it just looks like it’s in progress and that’s something very cool. Chunks of background aren’t finished either.
I love seeing progress posts. It’s wonderful to see your process and understand how detailed your sketches are, where you go from the sketch and how it layers. The foal is gorgeous and natural. This is going to be one of your best!
I run into that “ugly stage” feeling too on many of my paintings. Sometimes it doesn’t correlate with what other observers see and it’s just something personal. Other times I wind up layering and at some point it looks garish and every one of my artist friends agrees — yes it’s garish and blobby and ugly, but it will get better, keep going.
Keep going, the foal is a gem and you know it. The painting in your heart will soon be out in the world.
Thanks for the kind words Robert I doubt it will be one of my best, though I am hopeful it will be pretty good, The foreleg is still giving me grief and yes I have lost a painting when putting in the background. The deal with this piece is that suede is new to me and doesn’t react like wc paper so I may not be up to the challenge of getting a good grassy effect. In any case it is a good learning experience and I feel confident to move on to the piece I had in mind originally when I thought of working on suede, my horse’s portrait.
Undaunted, Thanks to you also.
So when did you last have snow? No snow here yet, but the wind is howling pretty good outside at the moment.
Hahahaha! When did we last have snow? Sorry, that question sounds so funny - it’s such a major event when it happens here; if I (or the media for that matter) haven’t mentioned it recently it’s because it hasn’t happened! I suppose for some areas snow is so common that it doesn’t get mentioned every time it falls. I think we had maybe 3 snow falls in February and nothing since!
I hope you work through the problems you are having with this — the positives outweigh the negatives, so hopefully you can keep going with it.
