Seriously, Is This A Real Problem?
Apparently so, but everyone needs a venue . . . don’t they?
So I was going through this mornings email and came across a prospectus for an international horse art competition created by Art Horse Magazine. Because I am a curious sort, I clicked through to scan over the rules for entry. And as I am scrolling through the pages I read this and come to an abrupt halt.
“Works produced by non-human artists are not eligible for this competition.”
Um . . . Whaaaaa? Has this been an actual issue in the past?
Sorry Flicka, your existential impressionistic oil on summer grasses is not allowed. Nor is Prince’s mixed media version of “Hoof Prints In The Sand.”
At any rate for anyone (anyone human that is) possibly interested check out the Art Horse Magazine website for rules of entry. Also you can view past winners which is always helpful to see what sort of art the judge’s lean toward. They have some seriously beautiful, high quality horse art folks.

hehe thats a funny rule! i think one time they should do a competition for animals, by animals…I wonder what they would come up with!! : ) Maybe thats one for our pet portrait forum!!
That’s a bit frustrating actually. I know that there are some apes that paint and have humans representing them and there are also some people who encourage cats to paint. I doubt a cat would produce anything representational — they seemed to do abstract patterns that sometimes resembled four-point mandalas — but apes may well learn to paint something recognizably a horse.
Scary thought to me, considering that they are such close cousins — scary the thought of their being specifically ruled out, just on the off chance that a being with thumbs could learn to paint without being of my species.
Your kinda a serious guy today, Robert.
Huh and here I was thinking of a horse doing the painting. You know like “a horse, art competition.”
Actually many animals “paint” I know many primates, elephants, sea lions and horses. (and as you said they have representation) Probably loads more I don’t know of. These are mostly painting because trainers have taught them to for reward (referred to as enrichment) and then continue on because the animals enjoy it. But I don’t think they are artists. Just like a 3 yr old making mud pies is not a chef. And a horse at a barn is not musically inclined just because he loves the sound of breaking glass. (pops the windows out quite regularly)
You know I love critters and think of them as family. But they are what they and and need to be celebrated as such. Apes are way closer to us than most people like to think, but I doubt they will be much bothered from the exclusion of an art competition.
Hey Mel, Kinda an interesting thought. You think you got enough people who’d participate? You’ll have to let me know if you do.
ok ill see if i can get my cat to do something, if it works out ill have to put it on the forum as a challenge, to see what everyone comes up with : )
Thanks for the links to some “seriously beautiful” horse artwork — you can say that again.
