Snow Leopard on Handmade Paper

Well here it is finally. I plan to tweak it just a bit. I’ll probably fluff out the edging fur to look a little softer. I’m not sure how I am going to frame it, or if I even am. I am not all that thrilled with this one. I may just stick it in a box for the time being. Once again in order to cut down on scan time I did it in one scan, instead of two, (which would have shown the deckling and made it look so much prettier.)

I am pondering what to do next. Connie sent a fresh box of handmade paper (to replace the stuff that was too soft.) So the possibilitites are endless. I am thinking lillypads of somesort, maybe with a koi? I may also try my lambs again. The nice thing about these little paintings are, I can just do something on a whim.

I think this one is beautiful. I thought you had realised from past experience that just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean others won’t!

    Hmm, good point. Undaunted. :) Still . . .

Hi Mona, Hi Undaunted. Sorry I’ve not been around — it was a busy weekend and I was anxious to draw yesterday and today. I am staying away from the computer a little more, since I used to get on it in the morning and now it is better to work on art in the morning because the realtively new dog here (my friend’s) is not so restless in the morning. Also, I just plain have more time if I don’t get on the computer so much.

I like the snow leopard too, Mona. It is not as complex as most of your pieces, but I think it could still warrant a framing.

Thanks for all of the tips — yes, I can relate to the fear of failure one, I am still “waiting” for things to be perfect, in a way. But really, I am almost half way to 20 animal related pieces acceptable to me for a website and to choose from for a brochure. I may just have to do it at 15. I plan to do a piece for a local exhibit — we will see — but I will enter two or three of what I already have, if I don’t do a special one, just have to get them framed.

It is interesting about your freisian being such a marketable print, I like the composition alot, but it is not as colorful and involved as some of your more recent work. I am looking forward to hearing about the all time great seller print.

I am aiming for commissions, know I have to get out there in other ways. I do plan to make some some small portfolios and may have a table somewhere animal related with them and be drawing something to advertise pet portraits. I would love to go to a few art fairs (the kind you don’t have to be juried into — those too if I could get in) but not ready inventory wise or money wise to buy a tent.

Plans, plans, we will see, at least I am working on pieces most days right now, letting the lawn and house cleaning go, too.

Thanks for looking at the dog portrait and your nice comments, Mona. I will being posting the foal and another horse I did today, will let you know when. Going to then do both dogs here the small size I did for my friend. Sure like sanded surfaces better than the bristol — but then I am being to heavy handed with the pencils on both of them, have to develop a lighter touch.

Were the tornados anywhere near you? I am going to have to mapquest your town in order to get a better idea where you are in the big USA scheme of things.

Happy Painting until we meet Again, Angela

Good for you Angela, for getting in there and creating. I hear with the economy the way it is commissions are the way to go. You can also check into pet expos (horse expos) or put fliers in pet shops or vet clinics. This kind of thing takes a lot of word of mouth to really build. Your best advocates will be your clients.

I’m not sure what you planning on charging for your work. But as far as art fairs, unless you really are only looking for the experience, always go juried. Anything else will be to crafty and the general buyer will think your prices too high. Tents are cheap enough (can’t remember if we talked about this or not) Sams Club has the EZup kind for about $200. Often you can rent them at party places as well. just a thought. I would suggest indoor though for the first time. You’ll have enough to worry about without fearing the weather.

Speaking of . . no tornados here. We are at the very tip of tornado alley. So we have plenty of scares every year but so far we been VERY lucky. Actually had one hit town a couple of years back. It was 3 miles from our farm and 1/2 mile from the gallery. Touched down and went the other way for 6 miles and wiped out an entire neighboring town. Been nervous about them ever since. The devastion left everyone depressed for a very long time. Though thee are a few people still living there the town never really recovered. Do you see a lot of tornado action?

Hmmm, not sure what my all time best is. I’ll have to look, though I know it isn’t a horse piece. My guess would be Soul Mates which is clouded leopards or Skyscrapers which is a giraffe piece.

Looking forward to seeing your new work. :)

Hi, Mona — had three nice painting days, but now they are over. Going to my mom’s for part of this weekend (go about every other week, she needs the company — sometimes I do art work there, but probably won’t this weekend, as sometimes I think she would like more of my attention), probably will work around the house Sunday — back to art Monday, will post some work next week.

I sure am glad those tornados were not near you! Sorry to hear about the ones a couple of years ago. We are not considered to be in any “tornado alley”, but they do pop up here and there and “wind shear” has destroyed a few barns within a couple of miles in the last few years. There is just no apsolute predicting what Mother Nature will do.

I think I misunderstood one of your posts about the prints, I thought you were going to talk about the all time best seller, my mistake. I love all the kernels of wisdome you have been dispensing.

Still having a love affair my CP’s but have plans for an OP work in the not too distant future. I am commited to an acrylic painting for a mural, long story, did two in Feb/March — also, a new medium for me (did oils for years long ago). This aside, my main goal is to get this portfolio done and most of the paintings I am doing lately, I am really enjoying.

Catch you Sunday or Monday, Happy Painting, Angela

Angela, Ah I see. Natural Grace has been my best selling image for the past two years. It is hard to guage an all time best seller since I have only been marketing prints for a few years and so some have literally been selling for twice as long as others.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with in new artwork. Have a great weekend!
