The Colors of White
Here’s my latest on my Colton painting. Not making a lot of progress but I have been packing for an upcoming event. So far so good I think.
Technicalities
Okay, I am unsure if white is technically considered a color. But not being one for caring about such things, I’m going ahead with the premise anyway.
Here are all the various colors that went into creating my white horse, (actually, technically it is a grey horse.) Mostly I used both warm and cool grays, flesh and bubble gum pink, a nice rusty ginger color (which I love,) periwinkle (of course, must have periwinkle if I got a ginger color) and smoky blue.
I realize it doesn’t look like it but I have been layering like a madwoman. Layer in of darks, then scrub in a layer of lights, then back to the darks.
It is a little challenging to get a good idea of proper contrast without having my background in yet. I may have to put that in soon, so I can progress along without having to do too much more thinking about it

Still coming along BEAUTIFULLY. I would believe you are layering like a mad woman — can see many subtle colors. I are you wetting the new sections in any way, since this is WC CP? I haven’t been brave enough to try the WC CP — I guess I have become drawn to the CP’s to gain greater control than I was having with OP’s there for awhile — afraid to give it up right now with WC — yet curious to try at some point not too far off. Would be great, even if not right now, to hear about with drew you WC CP in the first place, you have done such a magnificent job of discussing becoming intrigued with OP. Thanks for sharing your process with the WC CP here, very stimulating. Going to another festifval this weekend? If so, best of luck with the weather and sales! Angela
Hey Angela,
My first layer gets wetted and then I force in as much color as I can until the paper won’t take any more. If I feel it still needs more I wet the paper again and then again add another dry layer. I use very little water so the paper dries almost immediately.
I am enjoying switching back and forth between the mediums. I think it has more to do with working tightly versus working loosely. Kinda depends on my mood. I choose WCP for Colton because I looked at who the market was and figured a highly detailed portrait might sell better for them in this instance.
Yup, we leave today. Can’t quite bring up any enthusiam for it though.
Wow, it’s amazing how many colours are needed to produce a white looking horse! It’s still looking beautiful.
