The Drawing Stage

This has about 5 hours draw time in it. I’m still working on the saddle and breast collar. Apparently it’s been a long time since I’ve drawn tack because most of my recent drawings have been very quick to do, and this has taken forever. The paper size is 18×24 so the drawing is currently (I may change the cropping yet) about 18×22.

Actually I was torn between doing this or doing a Friesian Sport Horse (who looks like a huge red leopard pattern appaloosa) with his head tossed back and hair flying. But I need to get some frisket paper for that since I intend to leave the suede as the background. The plan is to get some tomorrow if the local Hobby Lobby has it.

Anywho, I started drawing out Big Al. My model is Alborozo (reference photo here) from last year’s Breyerfest trip. If the frisket paper is available I may just move on to the monster appy and come back to Big Al after.

UPDATED
I forgot to mention this will be another watercolor pencil on suede, as will the monster appy also be.

PS
Sheesh! I am pretty sure I totally trashed the proper sentence structure there. I mean, I play pretty free and loose with sentence structure anyway. But I think I may have been channeling Yoda.

I really have to try watercolor pencil on suede sometime. It’s so beautiful the way you do it. Gorgeous drawing.

Wow, 5 hours?? I don’t think I would have the patience. Which is probably why you draw and I don’t :)

    Looking like a winner, Mona!

Thanks guys. In total I put in about 7 hours draw time which felt tedious at the time. However I have spent as much as 30 hours drawing when I have done multiple horses in tack. Yikes! I think all my small paintings have spoiled me some.

Mona, worked with you years ago and you were a great artist then. I can see nothing has changed

OMG!!! How the heck are you! I was thinking about you a little while ago. (like 6 months) I was looking through the old photo albums and seen pics of you and Ed from when we all went hiking up Little Elk Creek out in Rapid. I did a google search for you but all I found was facebook page, which I don’t yet do.

Seriously tell me everything. If you want to email instead just go to my website and hit contact us.
