The Fonda Art Center
Normally, when in the art fair off-season my Sundays are either spent working on a painting or in sloth mode. Today I really wanted to be a sloth. I wanted to waste away my hours laying around in sweats, watching TV or playing PS2, and eating prepackaged food. It is brittle cold outside. (A projected high today of -1 degree. You don’t even want to know what the low is going to be) So sticking my nose out the door for any reason, was not at all appealing.
But as luck would have it, I had agreed to participate in the Fonda Art Center Music/Art Sunday Drop In. So, Mike and I packed up the van and headed out. I have never been to the Fonda Art Center before but had heard many good things about it. The town of Fonda had planned on tearing down one their old churches. After much effort by the community, they managed to save it from it’s fate and converted it into an art center. Their Sunday Music/Art Drop In happens every second Sunday of the month.
Today, in addition to myself, they hosted another Rolfe native, Al Srouf to play his guitar and sing. Al is a talented singer/song writer but he also has a great talent for getting audience participation. Despite the fact that we share the same small village, I have only heard him sing one other time and fully enjoyed his music. Also today was poet Janet Moore, doing a book signing for her recently published book “Life Is Like A Toaster.”
They had a respectable crowd considering the weather. Which tells me that the arts are alive even in the most rural of areas. I demonstrated oil pastel painting, as well as watercolor pencil techniques. But mostly I had loads of fun talking with people. In the end, I enjoyed myself way more than had I spent the day on the couch. Thanks to Annie Reiff for inviting us!
So next time your wandering through Fonda be sure to stop in and see what going on at the art center.
