I know some galleries I've been to make you feel at home and welcomed. While others try to be high society. There was one gallery in Iowa that actually was turning people away from the door because they were holding the artist reception and it was invitation only. The artist was bothered by this because of course the whole point was to have the work get seen. I'd say participate in the show and don't fuss too much about the "silly people."
