What A Heifer

So I spent my Sunday doing a couple of my favorite things. Painting and gaming. I’ve had this old girl drawn out for a couple of weeks and have been eying it longingly ever since. Well today is the day.

Here’s a well kept secret about me . . . I love cattle. I love cattle almost as much as horses. Not all cattle are worthy of my affections, mind you. Primarily, cattle of color and particularly rodeo/longhorn types. I have nearly as many photos of these types of cattle as I do of draft horses.

Now I’ve done at least a dozen draft horses paintings (probably more) in the past 10 years. Comparitively, how many paintings of cattle have I done in that same amount of time? One. Yup just one. Want to know the reason?

Because cattle are harder to sell than horses. While that may not be completely true in the broader sense, for me it is a fact. Perhaps it is because I have spent the past 10 years marketing horses and have become somewhat known for them that I think this. Who knows, maybe after painting cattle for 10 years in multiple works of art, the same would be true for them. I doubt it, though I’ve got no real proof as to why. It is just a feeling. (You know, like it is just a feeling that I’ll never be a ballerina.)

Anywho, this lovely lady was one of a local herd. I took this photo many years back and am finally getting around to committing her to paper. (10 1/2″ x 13″ hand made paper that is.) She had a calf on the side which is why she’s giving me the eye.

No, she is not done. But I would think one more uninterupted afternoon should she her finished. I kinda went wild with my colors. I seem to need to do that every now and again.

You go ahead and go wild! I love it when you do that! I look forward to seeing the finished result.

Dare I say it? I’m even becoming tempted to try an animal myself! Not sure which medium yet though, although I’m not sure if pencil can really do most animals justice, so I feel sure it will be in colour.

    Hey Thanks Ud.

Ooh . . . so what animal do think you might try? See I’m converting you slowly but surely. Though I might add, that reading your posts about creating ceramics is making me really want to try my hand at it. :)

Wow, I love the look of her. Her face is just great — makes me want to hug a cow. I love the colors. It seems like it is just flowing — days/paintings like that is what we live for, isn’t it? I love the colors. Would not have guessed that the cows do not sell well, I used to collect all things holstein, as I know quite few others did. Now chickens are the thing — could do that too, but am cutting down on and do not want stuff. Put paintings and prints, that could be a different matter.

P.S. what is your latest game fav? Happy Painting — hope you find some more happy painting time today! Angela

Thanks Angela, because she is small she is coming along quickly but it was a bit of a struggle because yesterday was incredibly dark. Middle of the afternoon looked like twilight. I had to work with my desk lamps so I am slightly concerned to see what she really looks like with no direct light shining on her. Other than that I really like her. She was too much fun. :)

I understand about the collecting thing, beside horses, I like flamingos. Shhh, tell no one.

I’m still playing Jak and Daxter games. We have 1,2,3 and the cobat racing. These style games last far longer than the war types, no idea why. At the gallery I have a game cube (way harder to find games for) so yesterday was playing Vexx (a Mario/Zelda sort of game) and Time Splitter (hunt them aliens type.) I am planning on getting the Call of Duty 4 sometime here in the near future. How about you? What are you playing these days?

Isn’t it great that we can all inspire each other in this way? Another blogger said that my blog is making her want to dig up some clay, and yet another blogger is making me want to try water colour! Water colour!? Me? Isn’t it great though?

I can’t decide on an animal, although I don’t think it will be anything like a dog or a cat. Nothing wrong with dogs or cats, but I think it will be something less cute - depending on your view point!

Just playing Rising Sun Medal of Honor on game cube. Not familiar with any of the games you mentioned. Get to play Wii at my brother’s house.

How is the Wii? At first it looked pretty simplictic but now I am getting more curious.

Vexx and the other are old.
